As Canada continues to battle an opioid epidemic, the Canadian Affiliation of Chiefs of Police is asking on federal lawmakers to decriminalize the possession of small quantities of unlawful medication for private consumption.

CACP’s president, Chief Constable Adam Palmer, mentioned it is time to rethink how police and governments method the use and abuse of unlawful medication with a view to save lives.

“Arresting people for easy possession of illicit medication has confirmed to be ineffective. It doesn’t save lives,” Palmer mentioned. “The CACP acknowledges substance use and dependancy as a public well being problem. Being hooked on a managed substance will not be a criminal offense and shouldn’t be handled as such.

“We advocate that Canada’s enforcement-based method for possession get replaced with a well being care method that diverts folks from the legal justice system.”

Palmer mentioned that, as an alternative choice to the legal mannequin, partnerships might be fashioned between social companies, police, the well being care sector and governments to ensure drug customers get entry to the therapy they want.

Palmer mentioned the main target of police efforts must be on cracking down on drug trafficking and the unlawful manufacturing and importation of medication — a activity the police are higher suited to deal with.
